California State Water Rationing – Regulated Water Use
With a drought in mind, regulating water use makes total sense. Regulators point out some common sense steps and some prohibitions. When it comes to prohibitions, the state wants local water agencies to reduce water use by up to 20 percent. That would include them prohibiting the use of drinkable water for ornamental or any non-functional lawn or turf. Specifically, these would be at all commercial, industrial, and institutional properties. Add to that common areas in subdivisions and homeowners associations. Another practice the state wants local water agencies to stop is watering of residential yards during or right after a rainstorm.
California state water rationing regulations are to remain in effect for one year. The regulations can be modified, or the State Water Board can end them before then.
Regulations and Recommendations for state residents also include:
- Water yards at individual homes just twice a week.
- Give trees just what they need, avoid over watering.
- Urban water supplies should implement all Level 2 demand reduction actions.
- Follow the guidance of your local water supplier.
It’s also a great idea to use drought tolerant plants in landscaping. And why not? Many of these plants are beautiful and decorative. Other ground coverings can be used instead of grass like stones, pebbles, or bark chips. These often make for ideal and attractive options. Not to mention easy-care yards!
