“The Streets are Blue”
by Gary Farmer
In 1869, the police force in Los Angeles went from a voluntary to a paid city police force. Since then, thousands upon thousands of men and women have served on the Los Angeles Police Department. In this book, thirty-four former officers share stories of their experiences in police work in their own words. Of the thirty-four, the first officer came on in 1941 and the last officer retired in 2009, a range of time just short of seventy years. The experiences recounted in this book cover a wide range of assignments and speak to just about any situation a police officer can encounter. The officers were frank, truthful, and open about an occupation met with everything from monotony to split-second life and death decisions. They recounted their thoughts of purpose, duty, and in many instances, valor. Whether rescuing an abused child, confronting armed individuals, managing civil disorder, or losing one of their own, the officers in this book reveal the human element present in all those who serve in law enforcement.
“More Than Heroic”
by Gary Farmer
Following The Streets Are Blue, this book, More Than Heroic, marks the second installment in a series of true tales of service from the front lines of the Los Angeles Police Department.
In this book, the realities of police work are captured through the spoken words of thirty former officers with the Los Angeles Police Department. The most powerful aspect of their words is that they reveal the individuals behind the badge, the individuals you call when in need. The officers, like others who serve in law enforcement, willingly answered the call to put themselves in harm’s way to protect and serve. As you read their stories, hopefully you will appreciate the sacrifices these extraordinary individuals made and, through their stories, the sacrifices others have made during their careers with the Los Angeles Police Department.
“For the People: Inside the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office 1850 – 2000”
by Michael Parrish
With visual and narrative portraits of headline-grabbing criminal cases, this volume charts the first 150 years of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, from its beginnings as a one-man operation to its modern-day emergence as the world’s largest local prosecutorial agency. Parrish (an editor and reporter for the Los Angeles Times ) offers insight into both sides of some of the most significant and well-known courtroom dramas ever, and shows how the district Attorney’s Office evolved to address a complex variety of crime, with prosecutors specializing in everything from family to gang violence, sexual assault, hate crimes, and an array of frauds. The book has a foreword by Kevin Starr, California State Librarian, and an introduction by Gil Garcetti, former Los Angeles County district attorney. It is extensively illustrated with dramatic b&w photographs.
