The City of Whittier has one of the most renowned historic backdrops in Los Angeles County. And, that backdrop comes primarily in the form of four designated areas. Not to mention it includes Pio Pico State Historic Park, the site of the last Mexican Governor’s hacienda. Although with the localized, City of Whittier historic districts in mind, they unfold in the areas of Central Park, College Hills, Earlham and Hadley-Greenleaf.

City of Whittier Historic Districts Yesterday and Today

City of Whittier Historic DistrictsThe Central Park Historic District became designated in 1990 and includes about 45 properties. Central Park itself, located in a niche of the heart of downtown has been a hub for the local population for over 100 years. It includes a statue of John Greenleaf Whittier, the namesake of the City. And, it comes surrounded by those many historic homes and buildings. In fact, no parking lot has ever been made for it, preserving the originality and nostalgia of the whole district.

College Hills Historic District came into prominence in 1923, when that area became subdivided. Then, it became a planned, hillside community, the first of its kind in the City. And the District, designated historic by the City in 2002, includes about 97 properties.

Earlham Historic District became designated by the City of Whittier in 2011. And, it includes 7 properties from the early Whittier College neighborhood that thrived from about 1903-1940. In fact, these historic homes originated directly with the College faculty and staff.

Hadley-Greenleaf Historic District comes scored with a number of beautifully tree-lined streets, while full of nostalgia and over 190 properties. Also, it comes nestled between Hadley St., Broadway Ave., Greenleaf Ave. and Painter Ave. It was designated historic by the City in 1990 and shares similar features with the directly adjacent, Central Park Historic District.
